President Karzai has survived two attempts on his life, a lot of government officials were killed in Taliban attacks. Small-scale attacks on villages, government offices, blockposts are common. Large-scale terrorist attacks are rare, but they are on rise since 2005 and are expected to increase considerably in 2006 as larger Western forces interfere into power spheres dominated by insurgents and drug traffickers. In order to split the Taliban forces, President Karzai offered amnesty to the former Taliban fighters. Several hundred mujahedeens had accepted the amnesty offer in 2006.
